Theo Nash: I’m a Classicist. Were Emily Wilson and I Watching the Same Odyssey Movie?

The close attention to the text that informs Wilson’s translation is lacking in her reading of the movie, and the idea that Nolan might have something new to say about the Odyssey is denied. At times, her critical eye is so insensitive that she appears to willfully be misunderstanding basic elements of the film’s plot, characters, and themes.

This, so much this!

I thoroughly enjoyed #TheOdyssey, as an emotional and moving film about the horrors of war and the consequences of abandoning principles for greed.

Reading Wilson’s review, I felt like she may have watched the film, but she was blind to what was actually happening on screen.

Again, it’s fine to like or not like a movie. But I think critics have an obligation to approach a work on its own terms (both good and bad!) when writing about a film.
